Galungan

Galungan is one of the most sacred and joyful celebrations in Balinese culture.

Galugan  returns every 210 days, according to the island’s ancient Pawukon. Spanning ten days, the festival ends with Kuningan, another spiritual highlight in the Balinese calendar.

During Galungan ancestral spirits and deities descend from the heavens to visit their earthly families. The celebration echoes the spirit of India’s Diwali—symbolizing the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil).

The signature color of Galungan is yellow, a symbol of purity and divinity. Every home decorates a tall bamboo penjor, adorned with yellow offerings and swaying ornaments.

Families gather, temples buzz with activity, and prayers fill the air from sunrise to sunset. Galungan is all about honoring heritage, togetherness, and the unseen forces that guide life.

On Galungan, the streets come alive. People dress in their finest traditional attire and bring offerings to shrines and temples.

The entire island feels elevated—sacred, festive, and glowing with purpose.
