True wonders of the ocean.

Coral reefs in Bali are not just beautiful—they’re alive with color, energy, and marine life. A healthy coral reef is like a bustling underwater city, full of creatures big and small. Without reefs, the ocean loses much of its charm and biodiversity.

Many marine species depend on coral reefs for food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Just look at the photos—you’ll see the difference a reef makes. In our region, especially around Menjangan Island and the nearby coasts, we’re lucky to be surrounded by vibrant coral reefs. Reefs also protect the coastlines of our beautiful islands, acting as natural barriers against waves and erosion.

Sadly, only about 30% of the Indonesian’s original reefs have survived. The main cause? Human impact through pollution, over fishing, destructive fishing methods and careless tourism.

Restoration

But here’s the good news: people can also be the solution. The first step is simple—stop damaging the reefs. The second? Support initiatives that help reefs regenerate and grow. In Bali, a local team called Biorock in Pejarakan is doing incredible work. They use eco-friendly technology to help coral grow faster and stronger.

Biorock also empowers local communities to protect their reefs and build sustainable livelihoods. Locals can fish responsibly, harvest seaweed, or guide eco-tourists through thriving reefs. It’s a win for nature and a win for the people who call these waters home.

Check out the Biorock website to learn more—and if you can, support their mission!
